Howdy there blog reader! In these strange times of late, with government lockdowns in place, social distancing being recommended and bars and restaurants shutting temporarily, there’ll be lots of you (including me!) who are sadly going to miss out on celebrating their birthday to full effect. Whether it’s a milestone birthday you’ve had to scale back to a party of one, or you’re a party animal who just loves to celebrate their birthday every year, we thought you’d enjoy some inspiration for when you’re ready to throw a belated bash!

To create the perfect hoedown, we think a rural setting is best –a marquee or a barn is ideal. In terms of decoration and furnishings, rustic wood furniture will set off the look perfectly (bonus points for gingham table linen for that extra “country” vibe) and straw bales are an absolute must.

If you’re doing a table plan, get creative with some cowboy and western themed table names. Pay attention to the little design details, and theme the party with cowboy themed props such as saddles, cowboy boots and western-inspired signage to make your guests feel like they’ve been transported to Texas! Cacti provide some greenery (and guests could even take them home as a party favour at the end of the night)!

The perfect food for a hoedown is definitely a BBQ – proper cowboy fodder! Think grilled or smoked meats, such as pulled pork, brisket or steaks, with sides of grilled corn, beans and macaroni cheese. Beer is the perfect partner, but a selection of cocktails will always be popular with guests too! If you decide to have a campfire (mind those straw bales though!) then a smores station is a fun addition.

When looking at keeping guests entertained, some country and western style music will fit the bill perfectly… Even more so if you can get some interactive line-dancing going! Rodeo bulls are great themed entertainment for a cowboy themed party too, and games such as ring toss. Fancy dress is a great idea too – in your invitations, encourage guests to wear their best ranch-inspired attire. You could request that the bar staff wear themed outfits too, such as cowboy hats and bandanas!

We think this theme lends itself particularly well to Summer and Autumn celebrations. If you’d like to get a party in the diary for later this year (whatever the theme or occasion) get in touch, as we’d love to use our styling expertise to make it happen for you. Yee-haw!
